JANUARY 2006
Inishowen Carnival Group takes to the skies
The Inishowen Carnival Group commences their annual preparations
for the St. Patrick's Day parade in Dublin with an information evening
at the Carnival office on the Moville Road, Carndonagh on Tuesday
17th January at 7.30pm.
This year's production is called 'Flights of Fantasy' and is based
on humankind's quest for flight, through the ages. The parade piece
will include a group of dancers representing the story of Icarus,
musicians in a large golden bird, and a variety of hapless characters
in fascinating contraptions desperately trying to take to the skies.
Also appearing will be a set to Montgofie inspired balloons, air
stewardesses from a fictional 'Air Inishowen' and the odd fluffy
cloud or two in what promises to be a bizarre and entertaining affair.
Burnfoot based artist Mark Hill will be responsible for many of
the flying contraptions made for the production alongside a team
of artists and volunteers drawn mainly from Inishowen and Derry.
Inspiration for the designs has come from such far removed sources
as Leonardo da Vinci and the Wacky Races. Costume and prop making
workshops will be taking place at the carnival office over the next
two months as well as weekly workshops for dancers and musicians
involved in the Parade. Opportunities are also available for people
who don't have the time to turn up for regular rehearsal but like
the idea of creating some madness on the streets of Dublin in front
of an audience of 50,000 people and a live television broadcast,
which is transmitted around the world. The group will be bringing
around 120 local people to perform in the parade. New members are
also welcome including individuals and community groups from across
Inishowen and the North West.
Anyone interesting in performing on the day or helping out with
costume and prop making should come to the information evening or
contact the carnival on 0035374 9373375.
The Inishowen Carnival Group is supported by St. Patrick's Festival
Dublin, Arts Council of Ireland, Donegal County Council, Fás
and the Inishowen Partnership.
