€3.2 Million for Greencastle Harbour
Deputy Cecilia Keaveney TD, has said that the 3.2 million allocation
by Marine Minister, Pat the Cope Gallagher, TD, towards the ongoing
development of Greencastle Harbour is an important step on the path
to securing the long term future of the harbour.
"The fishing industry has been facing and continues to face
very challenging times but we can't throw in the towel. We need
to continue our efforts to ensure the long-term recovery and sustainability
of this vital coastal industry. Central to that has been the recent
investment in boats and harbour infrastructure but this ambitions
plan is very exciting". Said Deputy Keaveney.
The overall project cost is in the the region of €3.5 million,
but according to Deputy Keaveney it is vital to protect the long
term future of the industry and other marine activity in Greencastle
such as the Foyle Ferry.
Marian McDonald, Local Councillor, said she had met the Minister
and local fishermen on Thursday when he was in Greencastle. "We
had a productive discussion with the Minister about the project
and I am confident that the Council will meet the financial commitments
required for this project. This is not to say that it won't be a
challenge but with such a strong County Manager I believe we will
achieve it.
