MAY 2009

Writers in the Community: Dave Duggan & Special Guests
Derry Central Library

On Thursday 28 May Derry Central Library, Foyle Street is delighted to welcome renowned Waterford-born writer Dave Duggan to showcase his new dramatic work for stage, radio and screen. This event will also be an unique opportunity to witness four of Derry’s best local actors perform dramatic readings from Dave's work. The audience will have a chance to participate in a discussion session afterwards with both writer and performers and find out how they all got started

Dave Duggan is a dramatist and novelist based in Derry. Much of his past work has reflected on the particular problems which have beset the city and has received international acclaim: the Oscar nomination for the film Dance Lexie Dance, the stage play AH 6905, which was produced in Afghanistan in 2008 and winning the Stewart Parker Trust Award for his Irish language play Gruagairí.

Duggan also wrote the powerful Scenes from an Inquiry based on his own reflections on the Saville Inquiry which is part of a collection of his work from Sole Purpose Productions published by Guildhall Press as Plays in a Peace Process in 2008.

Duggan's new radio play Everyone's got a Mountain to Climb will be broadcast on RTÉ in June as Ireland's entry to the international radio drama series World Play.

Actors performing at the library will include Damien Hasson, Kieran Griffiths, Kat Woods and Ashley Downey.

Damien Hasson graduated from The Oxford School of Drama in August of 2008 and has been working in Dublin, most recently appearing in La Dispute by Pierre Marivaux in The Abbey Theatre.

Kieran Griffiths starred in Ki Productions' musical I Love you, You're Perfect, Now Change by Joe Dipietro and Jimmy Roberts in the Millennium Forum and will take the lead in a Scott Marshall play Home Boy, Home in the Playhouse, Derry at the end of September.

Kat Woods is artistic director of Purple Penguin Productions. She is the only person this year to be awarded a place for Directing with the Drama Studio London.

Ashley Downey will star in The Open Couple by Dario Fo and Franca Rame with Purple Penguin Productions in July. She will attend the Atlantic Acting School in New York in September.

This is sure to be an entertaining and interesting evening with Dave Duggan and special guests and one not to be missed. If you are an avid reader, a budding writer, an aspiring actor and/or you just want to sit back and enjoy listening to and watching some local talent then come along to Derry Central Library on Thursday 28 May at 7.30pm.

All are welcome and light refreshments will be available. Free Admission. Copies of Plays in a Peace Process will also be on sale.

Writers in the Community is part of a season of writing showcases hosted by Libraries NI throughout all public libraries in Northern Ireland.
