MARCH 2009
'THE TRAGEDY OF DUNKEER HOUSE' HITS THE AIRWAVES!
Following its hugely successful sell-out runs at The Playhouse
Theatre and The Millennium Forum in Derry, 'The Tragedy of Dunkeer
House' comes to the airwaves of Inishowen.
Based upon actual events that took place in 1938 on the outskirts
of the quiet Donegal village of Carrigans, The Tragedy of Dunkeer
House tells the story of a mother's obsessive love for her only
son and the shocking lengths to which she is prepared to go to prevent
his marriage.
When Richard McPherson, son of Alice and Colonel Robert McPherson,
is engaged to be married to the beautiful Helen Kirkwood, the news
is not met with approval by his over-protective mother. When Richard
is severely injured in a horse riding accident it seems that the
wedding will be cancelled, however no-one has anticipated the young
lovers' determination to marry. Soon the stage is set for a terrible
and shocking denouement as Alice, driven to the edge of despair
and madness, takes matters into her own hands to prevent the wedding
in any way she can.
Written and directed by Stan McGowan and with a top-notch cast of
local talent 'The Tragedy of Dunkeer House' is a riveting study
of obsession that will stay with you long after you hear it!
After its' successful run on-stage Stan decided to adapt the play
to radio format. He then submitted this to ICR who were awarded
funding by the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland through the Sound
and Vision fund to produce the radio version. This is the second
radio play Stan has written, his previous play 'Knock - The Hill
of Mary' was aired on ICR last May to great acclaim.
His current radio drama 'The Tragedy of Dunkeer House' was produced
for ICR by Marie McDonald who works at the station. No stranger
to the stage herself, Marie said she was delighted to work with
Stan and the cast to record the drama in the studios in Carndonagh.
All members of the cast from the stage production were more than
enthusiastic about becoming involved in creating the play for another
medium and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
The radio drama will be broadcast on ICR 105 and 107.6fm at 12pm
on Easter Monday the 13th April! And if you can't pick it up over
the radio then log on to www.icrfm.ie
and click on 'Listen Live'.
