MARCH 2009

Evita Captions Open Doors for Deaf and Hard of Hearing at the Forum

The Millennium Forum will throw open their doors to anyone with hearing difficulties in order to enjoy the West End production of Evita on Friday 27th March, presented in association with ADAPT NI.

Access to the Forum for deaf users has previously been through ISL & BSL sign language interpretation and sound enhancement systems. This inaugural captioned performance will open a whole new world to deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people.

Caroline Shiels, Development Manager for Adapt welcomes this progress, she said: “ADAPT applauds the Millennium Forum for keeping accessibility high on their agenda. We welcome the opportunity to work in partnership with the Forum through Catch22, a new audience development project which supports this captioned performance as their latest accessibility initiative. ADAPT is keen to assist more organisations like the Forum to be proactive in breaking down the barriers that prevent the involvement of disabled people as audience members, artists and participants.”

Captioning is similar to television subtitling and gives deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people access to live performance. The actors’ words appear on a display screen on the stage at the same time as they are spoken or sung. Speaker names, sound effects, offstage noises and music descriptions are also shown allowing you to follow all the action.

This captioned performance of Evita will be helpful to a range of audiences: deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people; those whose hearing is not as sharp as it used to be; anyone who has difficulty following strong accents; tourists and those for whom English is not their first language.

Featuring some of the most famous and inspiring stage music ever written, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s extraordinary musical Evita brings to life the dynamic, larger-than-life persona of Eva Peron, wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Peron. Evita tells the story, from her young and ambitious beginnings, to the enormous wealth and power she gained and her ultimate rise to sainthood.

With more than 20 major awards to its credit, including the Oscar winning film version

starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas, and featuring one of the most coveted roles in musical theatre, this brand new production of the smash hit show truly promises to be the theatrical event of the year.

The captioned performance of Evita takes place at the Forum at 5:00pm on Friday 27th March. Box Office can take your booking in person from 9.30am to 5.30 Monday to Saturday; call 028 7126 4455 or email boxoffice@millenniumforum.co.uk. During this performance of Evita captions will be projected at stage left and stage right to ensure you have the best possible view of the captions. Please contact box office to arrange a seat with a clear view of captions. Concessions are available.
