Earl of Greencastle Musical
The musical Earl of Greencastle, written and produced by Patsy
Cavanagh, will be presented every Tuesday evening at 8pm in the
Cairn Theatre, Greencastle from July to the end of September.
William de Burgh was the Earl of Northburgh in the mid 1300s and
was also one of the most powerful Normans in Ireland. When his relation
Walter de Burgh challenged his power, William had him confined to
dungeons of Northburgh where he was left to die. To add to his guilt,
Walter had an affair with one of William's relations and this would
have been a serious offence on his own. It has been suggested that
the cruel manner of Walter's death so enraged the citizens of nearby
Derry City that they had the image of Walter's skeleton emblazoned
on their coat of arms and it remains there to the present day. The
romance, tragedy and revenge of the deBurghs is relived through
music, song and Irish dance in this sparkling new musical.
