Cahir Rua Ó Dochartaigh remembered
A presentation about the life and times of Cahir Rua Ó Dochartaigh,
the last Gaelic Chieftain from Inishowen, will take place 20th January
at 7.30pm in Buncrana Library. Jimmy McBride, chairman of Inishowen
Community Radio and renowned local historian, will make the presentation.
The talk will be given to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the
Battle of Kilmacrennan where Cahir lost his life at the age of 21.
Ó Dochartaigh had earlier sacked Derry and killed its governor,
George Paulet. He was pursued by English troops and he was killed
in a battle that ended in the rout of the Irish and the eventual
surrender by the survivors. A list of 600 names was taken at the
time and these have survived to the present day.
Buncrana named Cahir Ó Dochartaigh Avenue after the great
Chieftain, and of course the Ó Dochartaigh Keep is a famous
attraction in the town.
