FEBRUARY 2009
Inishowen Carnival Group prepares for St. Patrick's Parade
Inishowen Carnival Group will be making an appearance at the national
St. Patrick's parade, Dublin on 17th March for the 12th consecutive
year, when they will be taking 100 performers with them. The Group
and around 50 performers will also be making a trip to perform at
London's St. Patrick's and Lord Mayor's Parade on Sunday 15th March.
In London they will perform a a group of marauding Celtic Pirates
complete with an impressive array of multi-coloured silk painted
flags featuring Celtic designs and accompanied by some raucous heavy
metal pirate music, while in Dublin they will premiere a brand new
carnival production called "Aurora" based on myths and
legends of the Northern Lights.
With a large number of back packs, silk painted flags, large puppets,
pirate hats and costumes and a variety of smaller costume accessories
and props to be made for these events over the next month there
are a wealth of opportunities for anyone interested in getting creative
to get involved in practical costume and prop making workshops aimed
primarily at adults and young people over 14, which will take place
every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings from 7-9pm.
Tuesday's workshop will be led by Joanna McGlynn the lead designer
of this years "Aurora" production. Workshops will focus
on making of costume accessories using two different techniques
including a versatile costume jewellery technique stole from the
catwalks of London and Paris using wire, glue, car spray and glitter.
On Wednesday and Thursday evenings, participants will be able to
help make carnival back packs sculpted from coloured foam for the
Dublin parade and silk painted flags for both Dublin and London
parades.
Friday evenings will see the start of regular stiltwalking workshops
for anyone interested in learning to stiltwalk for the parade in
Dublin. With just over a month left before the parade, participants
will need to get a lot of practise in before what can be a gruelling
2 hours performing on stilts.
For anyone who has free time during the day, the carnival office
will be open from 11am until late from Tuesday to Thursday with
work also ongoing at weekends. Volunteers will learn interesting
techniques and be able to get creative while also learning more
about the processes involved in bringing such a large scale production
to fruition.
Workshops are open to everyone interested in helping out even if
they don't intend to come and perform with us in Dublin, though
there are still some spaces left for performers and stewards in
the Dublin parade.
If you are interested in getting involved call in at one of the
scheduled times above or phone the carnival office at 9373375. More
information is also available on the groups website: www.inishowencarnival.com
