Librarians unearth hidden treasures
If you would like to see 200 year old maps of Donegal, a humorous
menu written by novelist Patrick MacGill in a WW1 trench, old postcards
of Ramelton, Ardara, Ballyshannon and Moville or the Punishment
Book from Milford Workhouse, then log on to www.askaboutireland.ie
Berni Campbell, a Senior Library Assistant in the Central Library
has just completed the "Heritage Towns of Donegal" the
latest digitisation project for the Library Council of Ireland's
website. Using little-known items from the collections of Central
Library, the County Museum and the County Archives, Berni has in
the previous three years contributed items on the Boyds of Ballymacool,
authors Cathal O'Searcaigh and Michael MacGill, and the history
of our roads and bridges. Last year for the same website, Arlene
Crampsie, a Trinity postgraduate student working in the County Archives,
did an impressive project on Milford Workhouse and Poor Law Union,
using previously unseen documents, containing scanned and digitally
photographed documents from Local Studies collections both here
and across the 26 counties, this is a valuable website not just
for students, but for the enjoyment of anyone who has access to
the Internet.
