Cecilia Keaveney proposes rural distribution of heart saving equipment
Donegal North East Deputy Cecilia Keaveney TD, who chairs the Oireachtas
committee of Minister Ó Cuív's department, has initiated
discussions between her party colleague, Mr Eamon Ó Cuív,
Minister for Community Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and the Irish
Red Cross to ask them to consider expanding the availability of
defibrillators throughout the rural community through the existing
Red Cross Network.
Cecilia said, "Defibrillators are a vital piece of equipment
that can save lives of those who experience a heart attack while
they are being transported to hospital, I believe that each community
should have access to one. However, rather than just being a case
of purchasing this 'machine', the difficulty in providing such equipment
in a rural setting lies in the fact that people must be trained
in the use of it."
Deputy Keaveney said, that she had made initial contact with Minister
Ó Cuív and the Irish Red Cross to ask them to consider
expanding the availability of defibrillators. "I feel that
if the government assists with the cost and the Irish Red Cross
were able to provide the training through their existing rural network,
then we could overcome any issues that might arise in relation to
insurance. Cecilia went on to say, that she intends to develop this
concept, and is aware that it will require a collaborative approach
with community or sport organisations working closely with those
who can deliver training and support service. She insisted that
"Together we could increase the number and availability of
these life saving pieces of equipment throughout the country."
