Medical School May Open in 2009
It has emerged that a cross border postgraduate medical school
planned for Derry could open in 2009.
The University of Ulster has recommended, as part of a multimillion
pound development of its Magee campus in the city, the state-of-the-art
training facility which is among a number of ambitious plans.
The plans which include a £20 million Centre for Intelligence
System, an Institute for Professional Legal Training and new support
facilities to meet the needs of an expected student population of
10,000. The expansion of campus facilities on the former Foyle and
Londonderry College site, enhanced sports facilities and improvement
research activity and profile at Magee are also being discussed.
Professor Tom Fraser, Provost of Magee detailed the dramatic growth
at Magee since it became part of the University of Ulster in 1984
and said the medical school would be another major development if
it gets the green light. He said positive discussions on the proposal
have taken place between the University and both Altnagelvin and
Letterkenny General Hospital as well as the health boards on both
sides of the border. The project, which is subject to the positive
outcome of an economic appraisal would be a huge boost for the North
West region. He also said, "One thing we are aware of is the
shortage of medical training in this part of the island and that
is why we are thinking of a cross border medical school." Prof.
Fraser said it would be difficult to put a figure on the cost of
the expansion which will take place over the next 10 to 15 years.
