Manx Links to Ireland
Parliamentarians in the Isle of Man have been asked to consider
flights from their capital Douglas to City of Derry Airport.
Deputy Cecilia Keaveney, chair of the Joint Committee for Arts
and Tourism, recently had an opportunity to talk with her Isle of
Man counterpart. With flights currently operating between Galway
and the Isle of Man, they should also consider City of Derry Airport
as a possible route, she said.
I was informed that the Isle of Man is a very popular destination
for 34-50 year olds and families with children under the age of
12, said Deputy Keaveney. "I feel there would be reciprocal
opportunities and informed them of what the North West has to offer
as a holiday destination.
Deputy Keaveney noted the similarities between Manx and the Irish
language, after hearing one of the members speaking Manx. She was
informed that Manx is enjoying a popular revival and has been flourishing
since being placed as an option on the school curriculum. Meanwhile,
the Irish delegation received a message from First Minister of the
Isle of Man, Donald Gelling. He has served on the British Irish
Inter-parliamentary Body as the Isle of Man observer, along with
Deputy Keaveny who is a member.
Mr Gelling indicated that politicians in the Isle of Man were envious
of success of the Irish Celtic Tiger and were keen to develop parliamentary
links between and two jurisdictions.
