APR 2005
Carrowmena FC
V Redcastle United
Inish Times Featured Match of the week
Needing only a draw Brian Bell's men began well and on two minutes
Brian Tracey's free found the unmarked Gerard McCarron who headed
wide from eight yards. The home side replied with good interplay
between Paul Duffy and Benny Mullan saw Duffy fire wide from the
right hand side of the area.
The home side spurned a great opening on nine minutes when great
work by Declan McGuinness on the left saw his cross pass through
the entire Redcastle defence to Tony McGeady arriving unmarked at
the back post but he blazed over from eight yards.
On 15 minutes the home side went close again with PJ Barr's free
finding Raymond Campbell whose header was brilliantly tipped over
by Liam Davenport.
The remainder of the half as a scrappy affair littered with fouls
and few chances. The home side threatened first on the restart when
Benny Mullan's free was spilled by Davenport who redeemed himself
by saving well at the feet of Campbell. Redcastle got on top at
this stage and on 51 minutes Mark Davenport cut in from the left
before curling a shot just past the far post. Five minutes later
Seamus Farren's free was well claimed under the bar by Michael Noone
before, on 75 minutes, another Farren free was headed out to Davenport
whose volley was deflected behind. A minute later an excellent corner
by Tracey was punched clear from beneath the bar by Noone.
Then came the game's dramatic conclusion. Two minutes into added
time Carrowmenagh won a free kick 40 yards out. John Canning screamed
for everyone including keeper Noone - to go forward for the last
push. The kick broke to James Gillen who strode forward and unleashed
a thunderbolt from thirty yards which smacked off the post. With
everyone forward for the free kick and the Carrowmena goal unattended
the Redcastle clearance was latched onto by Tracey who picked the
ball up wide on the left and from the side line thirty five yards
out rolled the ball into the empty net to send the visiting fans
and players into ecstatic celebrations.
