A 'Ferry' Good Start to the Summer
Now that hopefully summer is upon us the Inishowen peninsula s
starting to look its best and the various attractions are vying
with each other to supply the best service to our visitors.
Swilly Ferry: In a scene reminiscent of wartime naval exercise
the new Lough Swilly ferry left Buncrana terminal surrounded by
a flotilla of small boats amid glorious sunshine and the cheers
of well-wishers who had lined the pier wall to get a view of the
maiden voyage of a ship that had been talked about, worked for and
hoped for, for about 20 years. With two ferries now up and running
and no doubt attracting visitors from both the greater Donegal area
and the Causeway Coast area, Inishowen must not let itself become
just a land-bridge between others, perhaps better known attractions,
and therefore all local tourism providers are urged to work tirelessly
to ensure the transient visitor stop off in Inishowen.
Information Map: A laminated and very detailed information
map has been launched about the Inishowen area. The idea behind
the new venture is that the many hotels, bars, restaurants and other
public places in the area will display the information card which
contains a map of the peninsula, courtesy of Inishowen Tourism,
also carries a numbered series of adverts cross-referenced to were
twenty of our main attractions are located and how to contact them.
Golf: Have you trouble with your golf swing? Or is there
one club you would like to get more practice with? Or would you
like you to try out golf before committing yourself some expensive
purchases or membership fees? The place to visit is the Inishowen
Driving Range on the Malin Road Carndonagh where there are 20 bays
to drive or pitch from onto a well marked fairway.
Horse Riding: Lenamore Stables, near Muff are open and there
are also other horse riding facilities located in the beautiful
Inch Island. There are ample opportunity to go trekking on some
wonderful sandy beaches and roads are virtually traffic free.
Glenlevin Water Fall: This beautiful 50 ft waterfall was
a well kept secret for centuries, situated as it is at the head
of a glen with almost sheer bracken and shrub covered precipices
at either side. Now a wonderful walk has been constructed from the
main road to the waterfall. There are numerous picnic tables and
seats scattered along the winding path, which criss-crosses the
stream coming from the waterfall.
Moville Pottery: Moville Pottery is unique in Inishowen
and has had a very exciting time over the last year. As well as
moving into their superb new studio, they have introduced some wonderful
new finishes to their extensive range of pottery. There are studio
tours available and visitors have the option of painting their own
pot. There is also a viewing gallery where visitors can watch the
potters at work , and they can avail of a fresh cup of tea or coffee.
The Curiosity Shop: As its name suggests, it is an antique
shop, actually the most northerly in Ireland. It also boasts the
best scenic view from its front door to be seen anywhere in Ireland.
Inishowen Boating: The 'Barracuda' which is owned by Carrowmore
Boating Company of Malin, is based at Bunagee Harbour near Culdaff.
The boat is fully licensed and inspected rigorously on an annual
basis and has a first- class skipper in Des Mills, who has a wealth
of experience under his belt. It can cater for parties of up to
12 anglers.
