January 2004
Moville Artist's Belfast Show
An exhibition by Inishowen artist, Maria McKinney, Bredagh Glen,
Moville, is currently on show at the Art Tank Gallery, Lisburn Road,
Belfast. Maria is studying for her BA in Fine Art at the University
of Ulster in Belfast, graduated from NWIFHE, Derry in 2003, and
previously was a pupil in Carndonagh Community School. Maria was
greatly influenced by moving from her rural home place to the urban
environment. Maria said "I am curious as to how we accept our
existing world.. Questioning the individual viewer's perception
motivates my work. Material and site trigger the direction a piece
will take. The process, executing the work, is more important to
me than the piece itself. I endeavor to open up new possibilities
for reality to exist. Conventional reality, (our perception of)
is being questioned. I try and expand people's expectations of everyday
objects, as well as playing with its assumed context and use. I
use fragility to intrigue the onlooker, to invite them to examine
the work, its production, and its connotations. Visually, I try
to examine the traditional codes of space and perception, to invite
query into the everyday."
The show runs until Monday, 18th January, opening hours are 8a.m.
to 4p.m., Monday to Friday or by appointment, Art Tank 0289023055.
