Carrowmena christen New Pitch in style
Carrowmena cristened their new pitch on Sunday 22nd August 2004
by winning against Culdaff 3 - 2.
Carrowmena caused the upset of the day when they were full value
for their hard fought success over an understrength Culdaff side.
Played on a fabulous new surface at Tremone the visitors started
the better and on 16 minutes Brendan Lafferty's looping cross was
missed by keeper Michael Noone but cleared off the line by a defender.
A minute later the home side took the lead when a long clearance
was not dealt with by the Culdaff defence and Kevin mcDermott was
on hand to hammer the ball low to the corner from sixteen yards.
Culdaff replied and when Lafferty found Ian Cavanagh his effort
was easily gathered by Noone. Culdaf pressed again on 37 minutes
following a scramble after a corner which in the end saw Cavanagh's
effort smothered by Noone. The home side almost added a second on
the stroke of half time after good work by James Gillen on the right
saw him cut in and unleash a left foot shot which George Houten
tipped over superbly. Culdaff began the second half well and when
Noone could only parry Raymond McFeely's cross Lafferty's effort
was blocked away. The visitors levelled on 62 minutes when Ross
McGuinness found Edward Ruddy who spread a great ball to the left
for substitute Brian McGonigle who beat Noone to slot the ball to
the unguarded net.
Carrowmena hit back immediately when John McCormick beat his man
up the right and crossed for the unmarked Benny Mullan to head home
from six yards. They increased their lead with twenty minutes remaining
when a loose ball fell behind the Culdaff defence to McDermott who
hammered a low shot from twelve yards past Houten. Culdaff pressed
a lot but failed to create much. They did get a consolation in the
final minute when Laffery's cross shot completely deceived Noone
in the home goal but it made little difference in the end. (Commentary
