JULY 2004
Carey Closes in on Second Place in Irish Formula Vee Championship
Greencastle racing driver, John Carey is rapidly making a name for
himself in Irish Formula Championship. The 17 year old achieved a
first and third place finish in category C at the weekend races in
Mondello Park.
In the first race, Carey began in 12th position overall and finished
an excellent 6th overall, easily high enough up the grid to secure
first position in category C. He almost came a cropper on the last
bend, though, when he was forced to leave the track to avoid colliding
with a crash. He was able to recover and dropped back just two places.
There was a red flag in the second race meaning it had to begin
again and on the resumption Carey started in 18th position on the
grid. Carey glided his white racer to 12th position in the race
(3rd in his class). The weekend's results seen Carey, the youngest
driver in the class, tighten his grip on third place and bring him
to within touching distance of second place.
With three rounds of the championship still to run, Carey is on
120 points in third place, 14 points back on second place, 42 points
behind first place. The next round of the Formula Vee will be held
in Kirkistown on the 24th July.
