Following widespread consultation held in 2008 throughout the Inishowen Peninsula, gaps in transport service were identified in a number of rurally isolated areas. In response to those identified needs, Inishowen Development Partnership, through its Rural Transport Working Group and Board, devised schedules to address the needs of those without transport.

The Inishowen rural Transport Programme (IRTP) was launched on the 25th November 2008. The aims of the IRTP is to 'provide and develop rural transport services in Inishowen, targeting those who need it most through a responsive and quality service, based on best practice social economy models and partnership'. The programme is one of 37 operating throughout the 26 Counties and continues the recognition that local communities are best placed to identify their rural transport needs and to address them.

Currently we are operating on 8 routes, providing transport for people to access essential services in the local towns, enabling people to make connections to buses going to destinations outside of Inishowen and generally enabling people to visit family and friends. Our cross border service to Derry accommodates those clients who are accessing third level education or accessing social activities not currently available within the peninsula. Visitors in the area can avail of our services to view some of the most breathtaking scenery in Ireland as our minibus service travels along coastal roads.

Inishowen Rural Transport is open to people of all age groups. If a person does not reside along the scheduled route then a door-to-door service is available on request, which collects you at your door when you call and book through the office before 12 noon the day before travel.
