Sheela na Gig

Sheela na Gig appears to be a grotesque and swollen woman, her head is large with huge staring eyes looking straight at you. Her legs are thin and wide apart, bent at the knees. Most images of Sheela na Gig are found in medieval Christian churches all over Europe. It is said that she is there to keep evil spirits away, but there may be a deeper and more positive significance. She is the Earth Mother who gives and receives life back to herself, a figure of change and transition. Sheela na Gig is believed to be the Celtic goddess of creation and destruction.

Sheela na Gig's appearance can differ, she can represent fertility and look youthful or withered like an old infertile hag. She represents the extremes of birth and death. She is the mother who nurtures and devours all nature at the same time.
