Churches of Moville
by Alistair Rowan 'The Buildings of Ireland'
St Columb, Moville Parish
A moderate Gothic design of 1858 by Welland & Gillespie. Nave
and chancel with offset s porch surmounted by an octagonal belfry
and spire. This, unlike the rest, is of ashlar sandstone, most probably
a later addition, as the original design shows a tower and spire
adjoining the porch, marked 'cancelled' on the drawing. Standard
interior with high braced kingpost trusses to the roof and exposed
rafters. E window of three cusped lancets.

Presbyterian Church
1826 by J.G.Ferguson of Derry. A crib of St Columb, without of
course the chancel, but with the offset turret and spire to give
punch to the gable elevation.

Church of St Pius X
1953 by W.J. Dohety. An ambitious rectangular block using high-quality
materials - granite and slate outside, mahogany within - but too
aggressive to settle happily in this seaside town. Moreover the
design is not logical. The massive copper lantern, a twelve-sided
polygon riding importantly above the entrance front, only lights
a gallery at the back of the church. Inside a series of good modern
Stations of the Cross, a sycamore statue of St Pius, an an honest
wooden figure of St Joseph, this last by J. Haugh, 1959.
