New Year
Everything had to be cleaned, washed and left exceptionally tidy
on New Year's Eve. It was believed that if you left your dirty dishes
to the following day you would be lumbered with toil and labour
for the coming year.
To ensure good luck during the whole year, nothing was taken out
of the dwelling house on New Year's Day. Ashes remained in the hearth
and washing water remained in a large receptacle. Early in the morning,
water was taken from the well and salt was added. Each person took
three sips to invoke the protection of the Holy Trinity and the
remainder was given to the livestock.
The eldest of the family was responsible for going outside to bring
in the turf on the morning of New Year's Day.
