Aware
Helping to Defeat Depression
Aware is a voluntary organisation formed in 1985 to provide emotional support and information to those who experience depression and their families. Aware also seeks to create an increased public awareness of the nature, extent and consequences of depressive illness and promotes research into the causes and effective treatment of mood disorder. The organisation offers a range of services including a loCall Helpline (1890 303 302) which operates from 10am -10pm on weekdays and until 1am at weekends. There are over 60 Support Groups throughout the country, with a number of local groups in the North West in areas including Buncrana and Letterkenny. Buncrana Aware Depression Support Group meets on the 2nd & 4th Monday of every month at 7.30pm in the Nursing Unit, McGinn Avenue, Buncrana. Aware also delivers a secondary schools awareness programme, talks, public lectures and provides a free information service. Can you help?
The Care of the Aged really does require volunteers to help at the Day Centre some mornings/afternoons. Drivers are also needed to maintain their meals on wheels service to the elderly and housebound, due to increasing numbers requesting this service. Good Morning Inishowen

 

Good Morning Inishowen is a new and free Telephone Link Line Service for Older People in the Inishowen Area (Those aged 65 years and above.) Telephone calls are made to Older People on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9.30am until 1pm. Older People who choose to avail of the service will receive a telephone call at a time decided by them. The main aim of the telephone call is to ensure the Older person is safe and well in their own home and to help the Older Person with any enquiries they might have. Good Morning Inishowen hopes to extend the present service and commence a Good Evening Inishowen service. This should help make the long winter evenings a little shorter and brighter for some of the older people in the Inishowen area. Calls will be made on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm until 8.30pm. It is hoped that this will allow individuals who would like to volunteer, but are busy during the day, the opportunity to now get involved with this service. Inishowen Women's Outreach Inishowen Womens Outreach is a rural based community led project responding to the issue of Domestic Abuse in Inishowen. The Jack and Jill Children's Foundation is today calling for people across Ireland to send in old and unwanted mobile phones to the charity for recycling. More than 80,000 people have already requested a recycling envelope by calling the free phone number 1850 525 545, but so far only a fraction have been returned. The Jack and Jill Foundation was launched in 1987 by Jonathan Irwin and his wife Mary Ann O'Brien after they discovered during the tragically short life of their son Jack that there were virtually no state services available to provide for babies with severe developmental problems, including cerebral palsy. Steer's Supported Recovery
Programme
If you, or someone close to you, is affected by depression or anxiety Steer's Supported recovery Programme will help you recover confidence, self-esteem and emotional well being. Run in partnership with Donegal VEC, the programme is based in Letterkenny and takes place over ten weeks. Classes include: Stress Management and Relaxation Communication Skills, Art as Therapy and Introduction to Computers. The programme is free of charge and all services are provided by fully trained staff who understand the difficulties of coping with mental health issues. Family Support Group
As part of the community response strategy to combat suicide in Buncrana and Inishowen, a Family Support Group has commenced. The group is open to those family members bereaved through suicide. The meetings commences at 7.30pm and takes place on the second and fourth Thursday each month in the Inishowen Development Partnership Offices in Buncrana. The support group is facilitated by Breda Friel who is Course Director of Community Youth Work Education at the University of Ulster at Magee. A counsellor, trainer, supervisor, and trained trauma therapist Breda Friel is registered with UKCP and an accredited counsellor with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Women's Centre Letterkenny Letterkenny Women's Centre provides a space where women can pursue their own healing and development in a safe, caring and supportive environment. The centre developed from the coming together of a group of women in the late eighties who were committed to responding in a holistic way to the emotional, psychological, social and educational needs of women in Donegal.
